    Description: 
    In the 1920s, Somerset native, William J. L. (Herb) McCourtie, transformed a forty-two acre estate, once known as "Laiden (or Aiden) Lair," into a park featuring seventeen faux bois sculpted bridges, which criss cross a meandering stream, and two faux bois sculpted "tree" chimneys, which lead from underground apartments. The bridges, each one unique, are made of cement carved to look like logs, planks, and ropes. Constructed so as not to interfere with the park's natural beauty, the two chimneys needed for the underground apartment heating and boiler systems, are made of cement carved to look like trees.

    Remarks: 
    McCourtie Park contains seventeen bridges and two "tree" chimneys sculpted in the faux bois tradition of carving cement to look like wood. The faux bois sculptures in McCourtie Park were created by two Mexican artists, Cardoza and Carona, who were brought to Michigan by the park's creator, William J. L. (Herb) McCourtie.
