Remarks:
Commissioned by the Kennebunkport Village Improvement Society as part of a town beautification project. The idea initiated with painter Abbott Graves, a resident of Kennebunkport and one the Society's founders. The Town appropriated $100 towards the monument and the balance was raised through private subscription. Originally planned as a fountain with a clipper ship, the final work is an eagle on a pedestal. Additional funds were raised through the summer of 1908. IAS files include excerpts from Joyce Butler's "Kennebunkport Scrapbook," (Kennebunkport, ME: Thomas Murphy Publishing, 1977) and "A Kennebunkport Album," by Joyce Butler (Kennebunkport, ME: Rosemary House Press, 1984).
