has chosen wild creatures from the woods and swamps to represent the hours of the day on this sculpture sundial. Using the "Lost Wax" method of Bronze casting, the artist has used actual shells and skeletal parts to make his molds. (Under middle of sculpture:) The artist introduces the stainless steel needle (gnomon) as the presence of modern technology into a landscape of Bronze animals and nature thus using contrasting materials in a symbolic manner/Commissioned for the Parkway and Park Commission by the Percent For Art Program administered by Arts Council and the Arts Council of New Orleans, Sidney J. Barthelemy, Mayor signed
Description:
A large sundial consisting of a pink oval concrete base rising from a green rim with imprints of animal footprints. Around the edge of the base are stainless steel discs. On each disc is a bronze sculpture of an animal native to the woods and swamps of Louisiana. The animals are arranged in a clockwise fashion following the chain of evolutionary development, from invertebrate sea life to fish, reptiles, mammals and human beings. The animals include: a heron, a turtle, crabs, starfish, a crawfish with three crawfish holes, fish rising from the water, a skull, an armadillo, a deer skull with antlers, an alligator, sea shells, and small animal skulls. The stainless steel gnomon is a tall, thin, slanted pyramid shape. The pink base slopes down slightly towards the 12 o'clock position.
