Description:
An equatorial sundial with a gnomon that resembles a bowstring. The sundial is placed in a plaza that is surrounded by a low brick wall which features tiles inscribed with the names of contributors.

Remarks:
The sundial was part of the college's 50th anniversary celebration and was fabricated by welding students. Mike Pick, the college physics instructor, was responsible for the scientific design. Artist

Bell
did the artistic design and supervised the students who fabricated the sundial. Pat Gonzales, college welding instructor, helped construct the sundial. Warren Dunn, college art instructor, supervised the making of the contributor name tiles on the wall surrounding the plaza. Architect Jim Walsh designed the sundial plaza. Vancouver Extrusion Company anodized the sundial. Additional funding was provided by the Alcoa Foundation and the Southwest Washington Independent Forward Thrust (SWIFT).
IAS files contain a copy of Thomas D. Wolff's brochure, "Sundials," Dec. 1993. IAS files also contain complete transcription of the plaque on sundial. For related information see The Columbia (Vancouver, WA), Oct. 18, 1984.
