Description:
Figure of Joan of Arc astride her horse. She is clothed in armor with a cape unfurling behind her. Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail. She holds a flag in her raised proper right hand. She holds the horse's reins in her proper left hand. There is a sword extended behind her proper left leg. Covering most of the horse's head is an armor-like covering with slits for eyes and ears.

Remarks:
Gift of Henry Waldo Coe, a Portland physician and professor of medicine at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. After seeing the Joan of Arc sculpture in Paris, Coe commissioned a casting of the sculpture as a monument to the American doughboys of World War I. Originally, the sculpture was gilded. IAS files contain copies of newspaper articles from The Oregonian (Portland, OR), April 8, 1964 and May 9, 1967; Hollywood Times, Broadway Edition (Portland, OR), May 10, 1967; and The Press (Portland, OR), Feb. 21, 1968.
