    Description:
Standing figure of Christopher Columbus holding a globe in his proper left hand. On his proper left is a small pedestal of pink granite on which is a globe with a dove atop it. The sculpture is mounted on a granite base and is part of a fountain. Water runs down the base, but does not come into contact with the sculpture. In 1991, a new base and fountain were added. Different inscriptions and dates appear on each of the 4 sides of the fountain base. The connecting corner sections on the base are etched with outlines of inventions, such as the airplane, phonograph, telephone, etc. In a continuous circle around the fountain's base is etched the word: DISCOVERY.

    Remarks:
The statue was commissioned by The Pontifical College Josephinum in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage. It was purchased by Mssgr. Jessing in 1892 for $400 or $500. The piece was sculpted by Alphons Pelzer and cast by W. H. Mullins Company. The sculpture was originally located at Pontificial College Josephinum, on 18th Street between Mound and Main Streets, in Columbus between 1892-1932. It was presented to the State in 1932. The piece has been vandalized several times. On Oct. 12, 1953, the dove, which had been stolen by vandals and later found, was rededicated. In 1991, as part of the Statehouse restoration project, the statue was removed for restoration work by Karkadoulias. In 1991-1992, E. G. & G., Inc. designed a new granite base and fountain.
