Mazzini
is depicted with beard, moustache, chiseled cheekbones, and protruding brow. He stares down to his proper left. The sculpture rests on a square base decorated with beveled cornicing.

Giuseppe
Mazzini
(1805-1872) was an Italian writer who advocated religious freedom and a united Italy under a republican government. In 1831
Mazzini
organizied the "Young Italy" movement which Garibaldi joined and then went on to command Italy's revolutionary forces. The base was created by F. Matriati. The Bach and Cohen publication provided the execution date of 1876 and SOS surveyor transcribed the date following the sculptor's name as 1878. Sculpture was a gift of Italian Americans.
