    Description: 
    Portrait of James Buchanan seated in a chair dressed in a suit with a robe across his lap. He looks down at a paper which he holds in his proper left hand. Behind Buchanan is a rectangular white marble wall flanked by a curving stone bench with an allegorical figure at each end. Seated to the proper right is a bare-chested allegorical female representing Diplomacy. A bit of drapery is wrapped around her proper right arm and across her lap. Seated to the proper left is a bare-chested allegorical male representing Law. His legs are crossed and a bit a drapery covers his lap. In his proper left hand he holds a fasces, the Roman symbol of power.
