Remarks:
Robert Burns (1759-1796) was Scotland's national poet who wrote about human experiences and rural themes. Drawing on Scottish folk traditions, Burns published "Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect" in the 1780s, and traveled to Edinburgh where is was known as the "ploughman-poet." He later wrote songs to traditional Scottish airs. His best known song is "Auld Lang Syne." In 1873, Scottish sculptor, Sir John Steell was commissioned by subscribers to create this monument. Sculpture was a gift of New York Scottish Americans.
