    Description: 
    An equestrian statue with the rearing horse balanced on its back legs. San Martin wears a military uniform and points with his proper right hand. Sculpture rests on a simple rectangular granite-clad base. There is a bronze coat of arms for Argentina on the front of the base.

    Remarks: 
    Argentine general Jose de San Martin (1778-1850) liberated Argentina, Chile, and much of Peru from Spanish colonial rule. This statue is a reduced copy of the original which was erected in Buenos Aires in 1862. This 20th-century cast was given to New York City by the citizens of Buenos Aires in 1950. The coat of arms on the front of the base was modeled by Anthony De Francisci in 1954. Gayle and Cohen's book also includes a 1948 photograph of the original monument located Buenos Aires.
