    Description: 
    This statue depicts the moment at which Jose Marti received a mortal wound in battle. He is wearing the clothes of a gentleman, a vest and frock coat. His horse is rearing with its mane flying as Marti clutches his wounded side. Marti, a Cuban patriot was exiled to New York where he continued to fight for Cuban Independence. In 1892, he organized the Cuban Revolutionary Party and returned to Cuba in 1895 where he died in the battle of Dos Rios which marked the beginning of Cuba's war for independence from the Spanish.

    Remarks: 
    Dr. Jose Garcia-Mazas originated the idea of the Marti monument in 1950. The sculpture cost 350,000 dollars and was a gift to the Cuban government from the artist. The firm of Clarke & Rapuano were both the engineers and landscape architects for the piece. IAS files contain 1989 condition assessment. Inventory image files contain a historic photograph of the sculpture from the Art Commission of the City of New York files.
