, Wisconsin 1905-1951.
Remarks:
The idea for the monument originated in a 1900 editorial in Kuyer Polaki (
Milwaukee
's Polish-American newspaper). The Polish National Alliance Committee was formed and raised $13,000 for the statue, mostly from 25 cent donations from people of Polish and Lithuianian descent. Additional funds for base and foundation raised. The statue was originally erected on a limestone base at Becker Street and Lincoln Avenue at what was then called Lincoln Avenue Park, near the center of the Polish Community in the City. Tretanove rejected the first bronze cast made from his model and this second casting was made. Ferry & Clas designed the original base. In 1951, at the request of the Polish community, the statue was relocated from the north to the south entrance of the park, for greater visibility. A new granite (or marble) base was constructed.
