Monument commission: New York Chamber of Commerce. Funded by public subscription. Cost $53,000. As of April 1913, statue was being moved 15 feet in order to give the proposed Pulitzer Fountain a proper setting. Originally the sculpture was covered with two layers of gold leaf. The sculpture was fabricated in France and gilded at Saint-Gauden's studio in Cornish, New Hampshire. Alexander Phimister Proctor created the horse. Charles Follen McKim was the architect of the base. For related information see: Art Commission of the City of New York, "Catalogue of the Works of Art Belonging to the City of New York, vol. I, pg. 163. Between 1989 and July 1991, the sculpture was treated and regilded. Work included the fabrication of a new sword and palm frond.
