Coppini
's inclusion of a cane topped by a lion's head (symbol of Britain) reportedly alludes to the artist's disdain of Britain's colonial aspirations in America. A bronze plaque set in pavement immediately behind the sculpture's base reads: 1732 1932/THE NATIONAL SOCIETY/DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION/IN THE STATE OF TEXAS/FEBRUARY 22ND, 1932/HAS MARKED THIS SITE ON WHICH/WILL BE ERECTED A MONUMENT OF/AFFECTION AND GRATITUDE TO/GEORGE
