    Description: 
    Shakespeare is depicted standing with his proper left hand on his left hip and his proper right leg bent slightly forward. He holds a book in his proper right hand close to his chest. He wears short slashed trunks, full cloak and doublet of the Elizabethan period. The sculpture rests on a two-color bell-shaped base

    Remarks: 
    Base was designed by Jacob Wrey Mould and Henry Parry carved the base. Sketches of the piece can be found in Sharp's published source on John Quincy Adams Ward. Gift of the citizens of New York. The actor, James Morrison Steele MacKay, posed as the model for this statue of Shakespeare. The face is modelled after a portrait bust at Stratfor on Avon in England.The sculpture is the gift of citizens of New York who held a competition and selected the design of J. Q. A. Ward.
