    Gertrude, a maid from Bellevue where the artist was staying, served as model for the painting.
    Awarded the Temple gold medal for best picture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts 132nd Annual Exhibition. Exhibited at the Carnegie Institute 1934 International Exhibition as "Black Girl Sleeping."
