She is nude from the waist up, except for the head scarf she wears. Her proper left hand supports her drooping head and her elbow rests on the arm of the chair. Remarks:  Gertrude, a maid from Bellevue where the artist was staying, served as model for the painting. Awarded the Temple gold medal for best picture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts 132nd Annual Exhibition. Exhibited at the Carnegie Institute 1934 International Exhibition as "Black Girl Sleeping."
