Description:
"A water basin and a massive granite base surmounted by a bronze horse. The low basin forms a half-circle around the base and is divided into three compartments. Abutting the basin and the base to the rear are two risers leading to a drinking fountain attached to the base. The base consists of four stacked, rough cut blocks of granite. The front faces of the blocks decrease in size from bottom to top. Attached to the front of the base is a bronze gadrooned basin. Bronze cattail leaves and flowers spread beneath the basin. Attached to each side of the third block of the base is a bronze daffodil of art noveau or aesthetic influence. The bronze horse is prancing with the proper right front leg raised."

Remarks:
The fountain was given to the City of
Waterbury
by Caroline Welton so that horses might drink from its waters. The bronze horse is a statue of the donor's favorite horse, Knight.
The Daily Evening Transcript (Boston), Dec. 9, 1887, 6:4 indicates that a contract for the casting was awarded to Ames.
