Remarks:
This piece was originally entitled Germany, but in 1918 the sculpture was altered to represent Belgium and the title was changed to "Belgium." The sculpture was originally a woman leaning on an antique shield inscribed with the word "Kiel" which was the insignia of Kaiser Wilhelm. This piece is one of twelve statues along the cornice of the United States Customs House, each symbolizing an ancient or modern seafaring and commercial power. Inventory image files contain a photograph of all twelve sculptures and the photograph is filed with Karl Bitter's (Cartouche with Seal of the United States) IAS 87870013.
