Remarks:
The Fairmount Park Art Association formed the
Grant
Memorial Committee four days after Grant'
s
death. By 1896, nearly $13,000 was raised and a competition between seven artist was held.
French
won and asked Potter to model the horse. In 1893, a small-scale model for the memorial was finished. The enlargement took place at Potter'
s
studio in Enfield, Massachusetts. By 1895, the plaster model was ready. Bureau Brothers began the casting in 1896 and completed it by April 1897. The creation of the base was delayed due to funding for the contract and work did not begin until July 1897. Later, the dedication of the piece was delayed by the Spanish American War. The dedication finally took place on the seventy-seventh anniversary of
General
Grant'
s
birthday in coordination with a victory celebration for the war.
