    Description:
A memorial to President William McKinley with a free-standing full-length portrait of McKinley mounted on top of a square, stepped, fountain base with a front trough. McKinley is dressed in a double-breasted, knee-length coat. He holds a book in his extended proper left hand at waist level. His proper right hand rests on a book on podium by his side. Beneath McKinley on the front of the base is a bas-relief plaque depicting a boy and girl singing from a hymnal. The boy is on the right and the girl is on the left, each dressed in period clothes, including knickers and high shoes. Flanking the fountain on the front is an eagle mounted on a pillar, with spread wings and holding a snake in its claws. A second flanking eagle is missing.

    Remarks:
The movement to erect the memorial began at a meeting of the Board of Trade in Reading, Pennsylvania on Sept. 19, 1901. A model design by P. F. Eisenbrown's & Sons was accepted on May 8, 1903. The momorial cost 8,000. A large part of the funding for the memorial was generated by the school children of Berks County. Funding also came from citizens, churches, and other organizations. A conservator's report on the memorial was made to the City of Reading on July 15, 1992.
