Description:
A colossal bronze full-length portrait of George Washington tops a granite monument. Washington's proper right arm is outstretched. The sculpture stands on an acanthus leaf pedestal which surmounts a pavilion. The small round pavilion surmounts a 150-foot granite Roman Doric column. The capital has a ring of stars surmounted by egg and dart molding, with a large abacus which forms an observation platform with a railing. The column rests on a plinth which in turn rests on a high two-stage platform. The upper stage is of ashlar. Bronze relief plaques are mounted on three sides. The plaques depict Washington crossing the Delaware, the opening of the Battle of Trenton, and the surrender of the Hessians. The lower stage of the pedestal is a heavily rusticated block with a central entrance door flanked by a pair of full-length figures of Continental soldiers. The figures are bronze.
