    Description:
The monument features a hexagonal base adorned with three bronze military figures of a soldier, a sailor, and a cavalry officer, a tall granite column, and a granite female figure representing "Union" atop the column. The figure representing "Union" holds in her left hand a wreath and a shield bearing the Lawrence municipal seal "Industria" and an emblematic bee. Her proper right arm rests at her side and in her hand she holds a large sword sheathed in a scabbard. The figure of the soldier once held a rifle in his hands; the sailor once held a sword in front of him; and the cavalry officer once rested his proper left hand on the handle of a sword, but all of the weapons are now missing. The cavalry officer holds a pair of binoculars in his hand. Each military figure stands on a small granite base that extends from the hexagonal base.

    Remarks:
In September of 1879, the Civil War veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic Post 39 contributed $500 to fund a Civil War monument. Additional funding was provided by several corporations contributing $3,000; school children donating $200 in pennies and dimes; the Ladies Choral Union concert raising $200, and the citizens of Lawrence making up the remainder. The total cost of the monument was $11,111.75. The granite figure of "Union" was designed by David Richards. Both the figure of "Union" and the column on which she stands were carved by Theodore M. Perry at the Quincy Granite Works. The soldier was designed and modeled by Henry Jackson Ellicott. The sailor and cavalry officer were modeled by William R. O'Donovan. All three military figures were cast at the M. J. Power Bronze Foundry in New York.
Lawrence Common is also known as Campagnone Common.
