Remarks:
A photograph of the sculpture can be found in the Archives of American Art, in the collection entitled: Emma Stebbins scrapbook, 1858-1882, (microfilm reel 2082). The scrapbook gives dates of 1860-1873 and indicates angel is 8 feet high; the upper basin is 10 ft. in diameter; the cherubs supporting the upper basin are each 4 ft. high.
The fountain's substructure is by Jacob Wrey Mould and Calvert Vaux. Sculpture was modeled in Rome and cast in Munich. Fountain was purchased by the Central Park Board of Commissioners for 60,000 dollars. For a detailed description of the conservation and required maintenance for this sculpture, see Department of Parks and Recreation exhibition file 554. For related information on the fountain see: Art Commission of the City of New York, "Catalogue of the Works of Art Beloning to the City of New York," vol. I, pg. 176; and Department of Parks, Third Annual Report, 1872-1873.
According to an article in The Evening Post (New York), Sept. 5, 1872, 1:1 and 1:2, the winged figure of the "Angel of Mercy descending on the Pool of Bethesda" was cast by Professor Miller in Munich, and the granite octagonal basin was the joint design of Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould. The article also notes that the granite basin was contracted for by J. G. Batterson, of Hartford, Connecticut, from his quarry in Westerly, Rhode Island. And, the article also notes that the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Mass. and Robert Wood of Philadelphia are contractors for the bronze work, which is expected to be finished in October of 1872.
