    Remarks:
The memorial was initially proposed to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Lincoln's visit to Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 1859. It was funded by public subscription, with donations from school children and the business community, and members of the E.B. Wolcott Post of the G.A.R. $23,000 was raised for the memorial, but World War I intervened. In 1932, the Lincoln Memorial Association announced a national competition for the design, which was won by Cecere. The statue was dedicated Sept. 15, 1934. It was originally installed on the bridge, close to where is now stands (but facing west). It was removed in late 1954 because of the construction of the War Memorial Center and later placed on city-owned park land in front of the Elks Club on East Wisconsin Avenue. With the remodeling of the Lincoln Memorial Drive bridge in 1986, the statue was returned back near its original site, but set facing west. Ferdinand Eiseman designed and fabricated the polished granite base.
