    Description: 
    A standing soldier and a kneeling sailor, both holding rifles, are mounted atop a granite base that features four decorative relief plaques. The sailor aims his rifle straight down Broadway toward the harbor while the soldier stands guard at his side. The figures are dressed in the uniforms of their respective branches of service. On the base, the front relief plaque depicts the insignia of the Grand Army of the Republic and bears the words "Veterans 1861-1866," an eagle, a cannon and cannon balls, and a flag, a star, and a scene of two soldiers with two children and a large mythical figure behind them. The right relief plaque depicts the insignia of the artillery division with wagon wheels and flags. The left relief plaque depicts the insignia of the cavalry with swords, flags, a saddle, and gloves. The rear relief plaque depicts the seal of the state of Rhode Island.
