    Description: 
    A larger than life-sized, full-length partially nude figure of the Goddess Minerva standing atop a hemisphere of the State Capitol Building. Her proper right arm is raised, holding an illuminated torch, resembling a pine bough with pine cone. Her proper left arm is extended down and back.

    Remarks: 
    The figure was estimated at $85,000 and was donated by the sculptor unofficially through a contractor. IAS files contain related articles, including the Maine Library Bulletin 13 (July-October, 1927); Maine Sunday Telegram, Feb. 20, 1983; Kennebec Journal, Nov. 18, 1983. Articles discuss the symbolism of the figure as both Minerva, goddess of wisdom; and the city of Augusta holding a torch resembling a pine bough to represent Maine, the pine tree state.
