Coadministered by City of Troy, Troy, Kansas
Located Doniphan County Courthouse, South side, on the square facing East Chestnut Street, Troy Kansas 66087
Remarks:
The artist chose the City of Troy for the siting of the sculpture because Doniphan County then held the largest population of tribal Indians of any county in the state, and Troy was the county seat. Mayor Tootie Blake and other Troy residents helped design and construct the base. An estimated 2,000 people attended the sculpture's dedication, including Governor Robert Bennett, State Senator John Chandler, and State Representative Francis Gordon. IAS files contain a copy of the dedication booklet and related articles from the Kansas Chief (Troy, Kansas), Oct. 5, 1978; Sept. 20, 1979; Sept. 27, 1979; Oct. 4, 1979; Oct. 20, 1988; and Sept. 13, 1994; and from The Gazette (St. Joseph, Missouri), Sept. 20, 1979; Sept. 30, 1979; and Oct. 21, 1988. IAS files also contain excerpt from Kansas Wildlife & Parks, (May/June 1988): pg. 43.
