    Description: 
    A bust of an American Indian with a feathered headdress and long hair. The Indian's face is a composite of facial characteristics and ornaments of Indians from various tribes. The sculpture is placed atop a base of cemented native stones.

    Remarks: 
    The artist chose the City of Troy for the siting of the sculpture because Doniphan County then held the largest population of tribal Indians of any county in the state, and Troy was the county seat. Mayor Tootie Blake and other Troy residents helped design and construct the base. An estimated 2,000 people attended the sculpture's dedication, including Governor Robert Bennett, State Senator John Chandler, and State Representative Francis Gordon. IAS files contain a copy of the dedication booklet and related articles from the Kansas Chief (Troy, Kansas), Oct. 5, 1978; Sept. 20, 1979; Sept. 27, 1979; Oct. 4, 1979; Oct. 20, 1988; and Sept. 13, 1994; and from The Gazette (St. Joseph, Missouri), Sept. 20, 1979; Sept. 30, 1979; and Oct. 21, 1988.
