    Remarks:
The lions flank the entrance steps to library and are part of the restrained sculptural program that was devised by the architects. When first installed, the lions were criticized for not appearing regal enough. Their enduring symbolism earned them nicknames such as Patience and Fortitude. One of the lions is pictured in the Gayle and Cohen publication.
