    Remarks:
IAS files contain newsclipping from Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY), June 19, 1988. This sculpture is the second large scale cast of the Gracehoper, authorized by the artist prior to his death. The sculpture was a gift from the Humana Foundation at a cost of one million dollars. It is based on a smaller scale model designed around 1961. The title Gracehoper comes from a line of James Joyce prose from Finnegan's Wake: "The silly billy of a Gracehoper had jingled through a jungle of love and debts and jangled through a jumble of life in doubts afterworse." Nearby plaque reads: TONY SMITH (1918-1980, AMERICAN0/GRACEHOPER/CONCEIVED BETWEEN 1961 AND 1972/BLACK PAINTED STEEL 23' X 22' X 46')/GIFT OF/THE HUMANA FOUNDATION IN APPRECIATION/OF WENDELL CHERRY'S LEADERSHIP AS/FIRST CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE/KENTUCKY CENTER FOR THE ARTS.
