Description:
A full-length figure of a Union soldier holding his rifle over to his front proper right side. He holds the barrel of the rifle with both hands and rests the rifle butt by his proper right foot. The soldier has a moustache and is in uniform, wearing a cap and a coat with a short cape. The sculpture is mounted on a square base adorned with a small column on each corner. At the top of the base is a pediment ornamented with laurel and oak wreaths. On the front of the base is a relief of an eagle with its wings spread wings atop two shields, one displaying the New York state seal and the other displaying the stars and stripes.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates the soldiers of Bath, New York who died in the Civil War. It was erected by a committee formed on Sept. 22, 1871. The total cost of the monument was $4,000 which was raised through public subscription. The cost for shipping the monument was $157.50; the cost for the foundation work was $87.50; and the cost for the lettering was $100. The statue is from a model by Charles
Conrads
called the "Manchester model." The monument was finished by the New England Granite Works and installed by
H
. M. Ashcraft of Norwich, New York. It was originally sited at the intersection of Washington and Liberty Streets, but relocated to its current site on June 23, 1959. In its original location, the soldier faced south.
