    Description: 
    A seated portrait of Nathaniel Hawthorne dressed in an overcoat and holding his hat and walking stick in his proper left hand. His proper right hand is on his hip. He is seated on a rock with a stump behind it. The sculpture rests on a hexagonal base.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was funded by the Nathaniel Hawthorne Memorial Association. The total cost of the sculpture was $50,000. R. Clipston Sturgis was the consulting architect on the sculpture project. The base was designed by architects Smith & Walker and was cut by the Rockport Granite Company. The inscription on the base was engraved ca. 1982 because the bronze base plaque had been stolen earlier. For additional reading see: "Visitor's Guide to Salem," Salem, MA: Essex Institute, 1927, pg. 183 and the files of the Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
    Condition: 
    Surveyed 1993 October. Well maintained.
